My Experience With Cobra SC 400D Dash Cam
Setting up and installing this dash cam was straight forward. The front camera connects with the rear camera with ease. With previous dash cameras, the rear camera cable was way too short and I was forced to make-do with unfavorable front locations.
However with the SC 400D, the rear camera cable is long enough to have in the rear window while placing the front cam below the rear view mirror. Also, there was nothing complicated about getting it paired with Cobra’s dash cam app.
Takeaway: Installation process is easy and intuitive.
Out of everything I experienced, I have to say that the camera images are top-tier. I could tell on my first use that the SC 400D had insane HDR video quality and a great camera sensor at night.
It really can’t be overstated because the front camera quality is among the best I’ve tested since starting this site, so I’ll probably mention it a few more times.
At night though, the rear camera isn’t good enough to capture license plates unless the vehicle is close behind you. However, the technology has definitely improved compared to previous generations.
There’s a significant jump in quality and features compared to the Cobra SC 200D, SC 201 and SC 100, which are Cobra’s more affordable options. The GPS navigation camera detects speed with minimal latency.
The Drive Smarter app is useful for video file management. Between voice commands, speed cameras, red light, emergency contact, and easy access to video files – the app has it all. I caught myself watching my SC 400D footage whenever I was bored.
Not to mention the app gives users the ability to share video files with other members of the drive smarter community .
Having a sticker mount, magnetic mount and suction cup included is what made this stand out from dash cams I’ve used in the past.
With other dash cams, a common issue I run into is that the suction mount doesn’t work. Not it works for a little then stops, other mounts failed day one in Texas weather. This was a huge plus for me.
Takeaway: The magnetic mount and sticker camera mount is far superior than the (my opinion).
One of the only negatives I experienced is, once installed, the adhesive mount can’t swivel.
You can’t change the front camera angle unless you install the magnetic mount, so if you want to record to the side of your car you’re out of luck. I had someone road raging next to me and wanted to do this but couldn’t.

The rear view camera video quality is quite up to par with the front camera but it does the job. The SC 400d rear camera is effortlessly in-sync with the. I didn’t have to make a single adjustment the rear camera sync, the first time ever.
G-Sensor
If you don’t know what a G-sensor does, we have a ton of informational articles about how they work. As a quick recap, G-sensors lock video files after any sudden movement occurs, such as an accident.
It’s a super important feature that most overlook. The Cobra SC 400D has a state of the art G-sensor, which tells me Cobra values their customers, even after they purchase.
All of the best dash cams have loop recording, which overwrites old footage if memory is full. G-sensors ensure that loop recording doesn’t get rid of an important video files.
Loop Recording may seem counter-intuitive, but you’d get annoyed if you had to erase all your video files every day just to use the dash cam the next day.
Drive Smarter App
An awesome feature in the Driver Smarter app is that you can get notified of police speed camera locations. This smart phone app allows SC 400d users to easily store and share videos and photos via cloud management.
The GPS in the app helps plan trips before getting in the car. You also have the ability to turn on navigation alerts and automatically update to the latest firmware with bluetooth connection. The heads up navigation was super useful, especially with the voice commands. I knew when a red light was coming from around a bend.
Cabin-View Accessory Cam Bundle
The Cobra SC 400D has an add-on cabin-view camera that connects to compatible Cobra SC smart dash cams. The mounted design has a Field of View of 140 degrees which guarantees that you have a full view with great image quality of the interior of your car or truck.
Cabin Night Vision is included to record interior video from the rear view mirror at night. It’s straight forward only takes a few seconds to connect, simply plug it into the back of your Cobra SC 400D.

With the SC 400D, Amazon Alexa assists you with any inquiry or request while you’re on the road, from playing music to navigating to locating restaurants.
