Playback Speed Calculator

Video Playback Speed Calculator

How to Use this Calculator

Time needed: 2 minutes

Use the playback speed inputs to calculate time and time saved based on your video or audio length.

  1. Enter Video/Audio Length

Enter your current video or audio recording length in hours, minutes, and seconds. Use ‘0’ if it’s not applicable.

  2. Enter Playback Speed

Specify the playback speed that you’re using on your audio or video. For example, if watching a video at 1.25x speed, you’d enter ‘1.25’ into the Playback Speed input.

  3. Click the Calculate Button

After entering the length of your video/audio recording and playback speed, you’ll be able to see the new calculated time of your recording.

  4. Time You Saved

The ‘Time Saved’ results section shows you how much time you gain or lose based on your playback speed input (watching a video recording at 1.5x speed saves time, watching a video at 0.5x speed loses time)

Enter Video Time & Playback Speed:

Key Features of the Playback Speed Calculator

Our Playback Speed Calculator offers several user-friendly features that make it a breeze to calculate adjusted playback times:

  • User-friendly inputs: Clearly marked fields for you to input the original duration in hours, minutes, and seconds, as well as your desired playback speed (ranging from 0.5x to 3x).
  • Automatic calculation: As soon as you input your desired values, the calculator provides the adjusted playback time based on your input.
  • Readable output: The adjusted playback time is displayed in a familiar format: “hh:mm:ss”.
  • Time saved: The calculator also estimates the amount of time you save by subtracting the adjusted duration from the original duration, displaying this saving in hours, minutes, and seconds.
  • Easy-to-navigate interface: The calculator has been designed with a clean and simple layout, ensuring a seamless user experience.

We hope this Playback Speed Calculator allows you to manage your time more efficiently when watching dash cam audio & video recordings.

Understanding the Calculation

The Playback Speed Calculator is an intuitive tool designed to calculate playback speed of your videos or sound. It also conveniently displays the amount of time you can save compared to the original duration.

How does it work?

The underlying principle is straightforward. The total time for a video or audio playback depends on the length of the content and the speed at which you’re playing it. The formula used to calculate the adjusted duration is:

Total time in seconds = [(Hours * 3600) + (Minutes * 60) + Seconds] / Playback Speed

For example, consider a video that is 1.5 hours long and you choose to watch it at 2x speed.

  • First, we need to convert the length of the video into seconds. Since there are 3600 seconds in an hour, a 1.5-hour video is 5400 seconds long.
  • Using our formula: Total time in seconds = 5400 / 2
  • This calculation gives us a total of 2700 seconds. However, to express this in a more relatable format, we often convert it back into minutes: Total time in minutes = 2700 / 60 = 45 minutes

Hence, watching a 1.5-hour video at 2x speed should take you about 45 minutes, thereby saving you 45 minutes of your time.

More Examples

All different dash cameras record for different lengths depending on their storage. Here are some different examples to help you understand how playback speed data affects the viewing/listening time:

Original TimePlayback SpeedCalculated time
01:20:002.000:40:00
00:12:301.500:08:20
00:30:000.501:00:00
02:15:001.7501:17:09
10:00:001.506:40:00

These examples should give you a good idea of how changing the playback speed can drastically alter the time it takes to watch or listen to a video or audio file. If you’re new to dash cams and don’t know how to tell if it’s recording or not, read our recent post here to learn how to tell visually.

This calculator is perfect for situations where you need to delete dash cam recordings but aren’t sure how long it’s going to take to you playback the entire video before starting. Shorten that time frame by increasing the playback speed of your viewer software.
