What I Liked

What I Liked About the Rove R3 Dash Camera

Three Cameras with High Video Resolution

Without a doubt, the number one thing I liked most about the Rove R3 dash cam is its high-quality video it records with a 3-channel setup.

It has cameras pointing toward the front, rear, and inside the cabin, all recording simultaneously in crisp 2K and 1080p resolution (wide dynamic range). The video quality is simply amazing during both day and night thanks to the R3s advanced Sony night vision sensors.

Takeaway: I’ve never had a 3 channel dash cam that captures such clear footage from all angles before the Rove R3.

Video Playback on the IPS Touch Screen

Another great feature is the responsive 3 inch IPS touchscreen display. Navigating through the menus and adjusting settings is intuitive and easy with the touchscreen.

I love that it only has one button to power it on and off – the rest is handled right from the display. The touchscreen is bright, vibrant, and works well even in direct sunlight. The Rove R3 easily has the most amount of features offered on a 3 channel dash cam, and it’s not even close.

LEDs & Night Vision

The night vision video quality is amazing thanks to the advanced Sony sensors. I can see everything clearly inside and outside my car, even with zero ambient lighting. This gives me peace of mind when driving at night.

I also really appreciate the four hidden infrared LEDs in the Rove R3’s interior camera. This allows the dash cam to continue recording crystal clear footage inside my car even in complete darkness. The cabin camera captures everything, even on the darkest night drives.

I haven’t seen this dashboard camera technology in many other brands… it was extremely helpful in letting me know if the cabin camera recording was operating as it should.

Built To Last

I’ve used the Rove R3 in both very hot sunny conditions and frigid winter weather. The supercapacitor power source allows it to operate in extreme temperatures ranging from -4° to 158°F. The video and features work flawlessly regardless of the conditions outside.

I’ve used the Rove R3 in both very hot sunny conditions and frigid winter weather. The supercapacitor power source allows it to operate in extreme temperatures ranging from -4° to 158°F. The video and features work flawlessly regardless of the conditions outside.

Unreliable Voice Controls

The voice guidance system can be a bit glitchy at times. For example, it’s supposed to notify me with voice alerts for things like memory card errors or parking mode activation. However, these verbal notifications don’t always come through when they are supposed to. The voice guidance works about 75% of the time, but I wish it was more consistent.

Pricing

The only other downside is that the Rove R3 is on the pricier side when compared to other dash cams. Given all of its capabilities, advanced technology, and sensors, the price tag is generally fair, but it’s not the most budget-friendly option out there. The extra cost does eat into my car accessories budget a bit.

Standout Features

The dual band 5GHz WiFi gave me super fast dash cam video accessibility via my phone. I never had to wait to access footage on the Rove app. It makes the entire R3 dash cam experience super user friendly.

I can quickly and easily connect the Rove R3 to my smartphone via the Rove mobile app. From there, I’m able to view live footage, change settings, download saved videos, and more. The video downloads super fast thanks to the 5GHz dual band WiFi. This convenience lets me access the footage immediately without having to physically remove the microSD card.

The built-in GPS lets my dash car camera embed my driving route, location, and speed directly into the video footage. This supplemental data could be extremely valuable if I ever need to use the footage as evidence.

I was so impressed by the R3’s weather performance that I nominated it as the best dash cam for high heat environments. After the rest of the team tested it out, they agreed and ranked it #1 on that list.

The parking monitoring feature has already come in handy several times. Whenever there is a hard impact or motion detected when I’m parked, my Rove R3 powers on to record footage immediately.

Takeaway: Thankfully, I haven’t had to use the footage for anything yet but I feel infinitely more comfortable with evidence recordings readily available to me at the drop of a hat.

Final Thoughts

4.5 out of 5
4.5/5

Taking into account all of my experience with the Rove R3 dash cam, I would rate it 4.5 out of 5 stars. Between the 3 channel dash cam video quality and responsive touchscreen interface, I was hooked within the first few days of using the R3. Then I noticed how much I enjoyed the WiFi connectivity, night vision, and parking monitor as add-ons to an already great product… Rove packed great technology and capabilities into this dash cam.

While the Rove R2 4K dash cam received a slightly higher rating from the Dash Cam Discount team, it’s primarily due to the affordability in comparison. Overall, the Rove R3 offers more coverage through its 3-channel recording – but it’s reflected in the price.

The small downsides like inconsistent voice guidance and a little higher price don’t take away from how great this dash cam performed for me on a daily basis. I would absolutely recommend the Rove R3 to anyone looking for a premium dash cam with all the bells and whistles.

Based on my past month with the product, it’s safe to say the Rove R3 will be one of the best 3 channel dash cams for years to come thanks to its advanced feature set. If the R3 is a little too expensive for your price range, read our new Wolfbox i07 dash cam review because it’s a more affordable 3-channel dash cam option.

How We Rate Dash Cams

When the Dash Cam Discount team reviews dash cameras, we take an impartial approach to evaluate key factors that determine quality, value, and functionality.

We thoroughly test essential features like video resolution, night vision capabilities, intuitive controls, and extra tools like parking monitoring. We scrutinize footage clarity, lens quality, and ability to capture license plate numbers or street signs. We also examine build construction, ease of installation, and camera positioning. Key rating criteria include:

  • Value (0-5 stars): We compare video and feature quality to competitors at similar price points. Dash cams must provide strong return on investment.
  • User Friendliness (0-5 stars): Installation, controls, and accessing footage must be straightforward. Minimal wiring complexity is preferred.
  • Video Quality (0-5 stars): Front and rear footage must be clear and detailed, with excellent components like lenses and sensors.
  • Features (0-5 stars): Added tools like GPS, parking monitoring, or collision alerts boost functionality and value. Battery life and hardwiring needs are also assessed.

By focusing on these core metrics and comparing dash cams side-by-side, we provide shoppers with unbiased ratings they can trust. Please see our dash cam review criteria page for more on our evaluation process.
