Wolfbox G850 4K Mirror Dash Cam Review

Last Updated January 21, 2024 by Zach Harmon

The Wolfbox G850 dash cam gives a high-end feeling without a high-end price tag. When I saw the features online, I thought it was either a scam or the dash cam of the future.

Its Wide Dynamic Range (WDR) rear camera never missed a thing and had a huge screen to play my footage back while I was still in the car. From withstanding extreme temperatures to helpful parking assistance, the Wolfbox G850 is my co-pilot.

At this point it probably sounds like a sales pitch – the G850 had its fair-share of negatives too. Let’s get into my complete Wolfbox G850 review, starting with the pros and cons.

My Experience with Wolfbox G850 Rear View Mirror Dash Camera

My Wolfbox G850 Rear View Mirror Dash Cam Experience

First Impressions

At first glance, the large 12-inch screen of the G850 stands out from other dash cams. I’ve always had an untrained eye for noticing the smaller details, and this dash cam didn’t disappoint. The clarity it provides is simply unmatched – capturing everything from road signs to license plates with ease. Truly, the G850’s 4K front camera and 1080P rear camera combination is something to behold.

Value For Money Spent

First things first, the high cost performance without the price tag was the initial thing that drew me to the Wolfbox G850. What I love most about the Wolfbox G850 is that it combines high-end features without the associated high-end price tag.

The dash cam gives me smoother video experiences and includes advanced features like the parking monitor, all at a price that doesn’t have my wallet crying out for mercy. After comparing the G850 with my previous rearview dash cam, I realized what a bargain I got.

Takeaway: Not only is the G850 priced fairly to competition, but its value proposition is way higher. It comes jam-packed with features that outmatched competitors in the same price range.

It’s only about $30 more expensive than the Wolfbox G840S but it comes jam packed with features (most notably the security features). The only aspect that the G840S comes close to the G850 in – is direct side-by-side footage comparisons. Both of these mirror dash cam models have squeaky clean video quality.

Smooth Video Experience on Both Front & Rear Cameras

The G850 had great video quality, even in less than optimal lighting conditions, truly won me over. The dash cams Wide Dynamic Range technology allows for images that aren’t compromised by shadows or glare reflection.

During a late-night drive one night, it started hailing despite the weather being 100+ degrees all day (Unpredictable Texas Weather).  However, the rear-view mirror backup camera actually captured video of the hailstorm so clear and lifelike, I was astounded when playing back the video. That’s when I knew the Wolfbox G850 was a dash cam I could depend on.

Backup Camera Parking Assistance

When it came to parking, the G850 proved its worth tenfold. With the reverse assistance feature, an extra line of sight is activated when I switch to reverse gear, making tricky parking spots a thing of the past. The rear cam flip & mirror function is particularly useful for larger vehicles, making the G850 a great fit for RVs, pickups, and trucks as well.

Parking Monitor Functions

The Parking Monitor function was another big hit for me. Not only did it provide excellent visibility in the rear, but its parking monitor function was instrumental during those nerve-wracking parallel parks in the city. The video quality was amazing, capturing key details like license plates when highway road runners went speeding by me.

Security Aspects

The Wolfbox G850 comes equipped with a high quality G-Sensor detects sudden collision movement and locks the collision footage. Typically loop recording will automatically overwrite old files but this high quality G-Sensor won’t allow it to overwrite locked files. I find it comforting to know that even in the unfortunate event of an accident, this reliable dash cam has my back.

Additionally, the supercapacitor upgrade in the G850 is impressive. It’s designed to withstand extreme temperatures, meaning the dash cam’s operation isn’t compromised, whether I’m driving through a snowstorm or under the blazing summer sun.

My Wolfbox G850 Complaint

My Wolfbox G850 Complaint

My experience with the G850 wasn’t without negatives. I noticed my rearview camera mount was unstable, which is a setback for off-roaders like myself. Driving on bumpy roads, the dash cam mount would move around so much… I’m not sure how it didn’t fall off.

During my off-roading tips, the rear camera footage playback was practically unwatchable without getting motion sickness. However, with all the features the Wolfbox G850 has, this was a small trade-off… but worth noting for those who value it.

My Verdict

4.25 out of 5
4.5/5

Based on my personal experience, I’m going to give the Wolfbox G850 dash cam a solid 4.25 out of 5 stars using the official Dash Cam Discount rating methodologies. The exceptional video quality and multitude of safety features – all at an affordable price make it a standout choice for me. If you’re looking for a dash cam that makes your road journeys safer, clearer, and more secure, the Wolfbox G850 dash cam is the one you need.

The occasional rear camera mount instability on bumpy roads certainly doesn’t overshadow its advanced technology for an affordable price. And with the added convenience of the 32GB TF card and GPS module that came with my purchase, I’d say the G850 dash cam is a great value for money. But if you’re looking for an upgraded version of the G850 with more features, read our recent G900 Wolfbox review. With that being said, if both of those dash cams are out of your price range, read Amy’s Apeman C450 review for her experience with a decent budget dash camera.

Our Dash Cam Rating Methodology

In our relentless quest to review dash cams, we leave no stone unturned. Our testing process is designed to dive into aspects of each dash cam. Here’s a glimpse at how we test and rate each product:

  • Value for Money (Rated on a 0-5 star scale): Here, we aim to gauge whether the product offers bang for your buck. The focus is on balancing the quality and performance of the dash cam with its cost. We stack up the video quality against other dash cams at a similar price point, ensuring you get the best deal.
  • User-Friendliness (Rated on a 0-5 star scale): This criterion evaluates the device’s simplicity from installation to everyday use. We consider various factors, such as how straightforward it is to set up the power cable, access and manage the recorded footage, and navigate through the settings and features.
  • Picture Clarity & Component Quality (Rated on a 0-5 star scale): The heart of a dash cam lies in its camera lens, the quality of its SD card, and the performance of its G Sensor. We scrutinize these aspects by analyzing the sharpness and clarity of the video footage. Our goal is to assess whether the camera adeptly captures essential details like license plates and road signs, even under challenging conditions.
  • Extra Features (Rated on a 0-5 star scale): We appreciate the bonus bells and whistles, like a parking mode, inbuilt GPS, or speed alert radar detection that can give a dash cam an edge over others. We also examine aspects like battery life and assess whether there might be a necessity for an additional hardwiring kit.
