Cobra Road Scout Review – Dash Cam & Radar Detector Combo?

Speeding tickets are terrible & idiot drivers swerving into your lane causing accidents are even worse. Wouldn’t it be great to see it coming? Or at least have proof when insurance comes knocking.

Hold on to your seat belts because – based on my experience with Cobra Road Scout – road problems got 10x easier. This radar detector and full HD dash cam combination had me covered from every angle. Red light camera alerts, road condition notifications, and speed trap cameras were no match for the Road Scout. It even gave me live law enforcement locations.

I’m a tech enthusiast and the owner of a small dash cam business in Dallas. So when I heard about a 2-in-1 dash cam radar detector, I had to give it a try. I used the Cobra Road Scout for 1 month and this is my review. Lets jump in.

What I Liked

What I Liked About Cobra Road Scout

Two-For-One Solution

Combining the radar detector and the dash cam into one device has been a game-changer. I don’t have to clutter my windshield with multiple devices, and the overall aesthetic of my car interior has improved.

I should also mention the seamless integration of the two device purposes. I find it incredibly convenient to have one device serving both purposes so effectively.

Standalone Radar Detector

To start, the radar detection capability of the Cobra Road Scout is something I’m truly impressed with.  As an all-in-one compact threat detection system, it performs above and beyond my expectations. This radar detector doesn’t just spot potential hazards; it seems to have a knack for anticipating them, giving me just enough lead time to react appropriately.

Unlike my previous detectors, this one picks up signals at much longer distances. Whether it’s in the city or on a deserted country road, this baby does its job. My driving experience have been significantly improved since I started using it, thanks to the reliable alerts & impressive detection range.

Takeaway: If I bought the Road Scout and never used the dash cam portion – I’d still consider it a worthwhile purchase – it’s just that good.

Cobra App Compatibility

Then there’s the added bonus of the Cobra iRadar and Drive HD apps, both of which have been incredibly helpful. Despite a minor hiccup with compatibility issues with wireless CarPlay, it was nothing a simple workaround couldn’t fix.

And to be honest, the slight inconvenience is worth the wealth of information and the user-friendly interface that these apps provide. Seriously, the Driver Smarter app adds so much functionality & value that I could write an entire article about it. Oh wait, we already did!

Impressive Dash Cam Capability

Moving on to the dash cam portion, this feature is where the Cobra Road Scout truly shines. With the Sony Exmor image sensor and an Ambarella A12 processor, Road Scout offers crystal-clear Full HD 1080P video making sure my road trip details were captured with clarity.

With the wide 154 degree field of view, the lens doesn’t miss much on the road. The video recordings are enhanced by the radar detectors digital signal processing – making it all the more reliable.

For all these reasons the Cobra Road Scout made it to #2 in our best radar detector dash cam article. It won our award as the best for beginners because it’s a high quality product that doesn’t break the bank – unlike the very expensive Escort MAXcam 360c (#1 on our list) will for some shoppers.

What I Didn’t Like

What I Didn't Enjoy

My experience wasn’t all sunshine & rainbows though. The occasional false alert is something I’ve had to deal with during my month of testing it. One time it was a red light camera, the other a speed trap – the device isn’t always spot on. Keep in mind I usually drive 4 to 6 hours a day. That being said, false alarms were sporadic and didn’t detract from the Cobra Road Scouts overall effectiveness.

Bulky Mounting

Another minor complaint is the mount. The device itself is pretty small & compact, but the mount takes up a decent amount of space.

Realize this though… I’ve only mounted dash cams before, not radar detectors. I’m comparing the Cobra Road Scout mount to a traditional dash cam mount, so don’t place too much emphasis on this complaint.

Still, I’ve come to terms with it because the Road Scout’s performance makes up for this small drawback.

Radar Detectors Legality

This isn’t going to be an issue for the majority of readers. But just in case, you need to be aware radar detectors aren’t legal everywhere. For my US readers, the only states that don’t allow the radar detector portion of the Road Scout radar is Virginia and Washington D.C. Every other state is good to go.

Dash cams are legal in all US States though but some jurisdictions have strict laws on windshield placement vs dashboard placement. Read our state-by-state dash cam legality guide to learn where to mount your dash cam.

My Verdict

With all its capabilities, the Cobra Road Scout incorporates more than just a radar detector or dash cam; it’s a driver awareness device. In my opinion, it complements the needs of both a radar detector and a dash cam to keep you ready for unexpected moments.

I am genuinely impressed with the Cobra Road Scout. Considering all pros and cons I’ve mentioned, I’m giving it a solid 4.5 out of 5-star rating based on our standard product rating methodologies.

The Cobra Road Scout delivered on its promises, provided excellent radar detection and recording quality. Access to the Cobra iRadar and Drive HD apps is just an added bonus for me. All these make the Cobra Road Scout a worthy addition to any driver’s arsenal.

The false alerts are rare, and the windshield mount is sturdy. Road Scout isn’t perfect but it’s pretty darn close.

Takeaway: If you’re looking for a high-quality radar detection & dash cam recording device, look no further – the Cobra Road Scout is the all-in-one solution that you need.

With the Cobra Road Scout every journey feels a bit safer and more enjoyable – it’s a device I’d recommend to any driving enthusiast out there.
